"Year of the Peg and the Age of Sons and Daughters" – Kathi Pelton, Eugene, OR

Piles and Piles of Wooden Pegs

As we passed into the Jewish New Year of 5776, I kept experiencing the same vision over and over. In this vision, I saw a carpenter’s shop containing a workbench covered with piles and piles of wooden pegs. Then I saw the Lord standing before the bench. He was holding a knife and was whittling one of the wooden pegs with great attention. As He carved this peg, He would stop every few minutes and hold it up to a hole to see if they fit securely in the proper place that they were meant to be fastened. His eyes scanned every detail of the peg, as if it was the most important thing that He had ever made.

Each time I saw the vision, I would hear these words:

“My people will no longer be like square pegs trying to fit into round holes. They will be known as sons and daughters and fit in My Father’s heart securely.”

We have entered the Hebrew year 5776. Two of the Hebrew letters associated with this number are the ayin and the vav.

Ayin gives us a picture of an eye and vavgives us a picture of a peg, nail, or hook. When I discovered this, I understood why our Lord’s eyes were so intent on the peg He was whittling. Every aspect of His children’s lives that was not founded upon identity as a son or daughter was being whittled away. Every edge that keeps them from fitting in the Father’s heart was being chipped away so that they could find a secure home in His heart.

The Age of Sons and Daughters

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. 1 John 3:1

We have entered an age where the harvest field is great and ripe. The key to the harvest is the revealing of the sons and daughters of God. We read in Romans 8:19 that all creation longs and yearns for the revelation of the sons of God.

In past seasons, there have been many who have labored diligently for the Lord, but have not fully grasped His deep desire for them as beloved members of a family. But now, God is inviting all who are willing to embrace their identities as sons and daughters. An orphan spirit affecting many throughout the Church has caused the heart of God great pain. He has watched His children behave like orphans and paupers, causing them to live with deep insecurities and misrepresenting His true nature to the world. As we come to understand that we are children of God, we will no longer just know of Him, but will truly experience Him as Father – Papa, Daddy, Abba.

The Father will entrust the inheritance of His Son, Jesus, into the hands of His sons and daughters. I hear the Spirit saying that this is the Age of the Sons and Daughters. They will reveal the lavish love of the Father and the many will run to be a part of this family.

The Apple of His Eye

As the world sees the revealing of the sons of God, they will come into the family by the thousands. This revelation will also open the eyes of God’s chosen people, the Jews. God is sending many of His sons and daughters to support and show love to His chosen ones.

The battle has been great over the nations that have stood with Israel. Most have turned their backs on this land that was home to our Messiah. My nation, the United States of America, has turned away within our government. But many of God’s sons and daughters have continued to stand faithfully in the gap for the “apple of His eye.”

For thus said the LORD of hosts, after His glory sent Me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye… Zechariah 2:8

This year that speaks of an eye also speaks of the apple of His eye. It speaks of eyes being open and many sons and daughters coming home to the heart of the Father. God’s family will represent His government within the nation as they stand with Israel.

Securing the Peg

All glory belongs to the Lord! There are to be no other gods before Him and no glory taken in vain for ourselves or our personal gain. There is a great purification taking place in His yielded children, cleansing impure and selfish actions and motives.

In Isaiah 22:20-25, we read about an official in Hezekiah’s court named Shebna, who craved power and prestige, with no thought for the well-being of his people. He built a marvelous tomb for himself, so that he could be remembered with honor and splendor. Shebna was a man who wanted to promote himself more than he wanted to advance the Kingdom. So the Lord proclaimed that he would be removed from his position:

“‘In that day I will summon My servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I will drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will become a seat of honor for the house of his father. All the glory of his family will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots – all its lesser vessels, from the bowls to all the jars.

“‘In that day,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘the peg driven into the firm place will give way; it will be sheared off and will fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut down.’ The LORD has spoken.”

Because of his pride, Shebna was replaced by Eliakim, a true servant with a father’s heart. Yet, even an honorable man such as Eliakim could never ultimately be a support for all his people (verse 25). He was simply a shadow of the One who would truly fulfill this promise, who is “holy and true, who holds the key of David” (Revelation 3:7). The Lord is whittling away every vestige of self-exaltation among His people. It is because of His great love that He is removing anything that will enslave and entomb us. In His great love, He is removing the roots of pride and self-dependence that will cause us to fall if they remain.

Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent His rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in.

Because He delights in us, He will discipline us. His discipline is merely His love being made manifest in our lives. The chisel in His hand is painful against our rough edges for a moment, but the finished work will cause us to live securely as sons and daughters within the love of the Father’s heart. Yielding yourself to the work of His hand and humbling yourself before Him will allow this process to be completed quickly.

He’s a Good, Good Father

There is a song that has become very popular in Christian circles called “Good, Good Father” (written by Pat Barrett and Anthony Brown). Every time I hear this song I am moved deeply. It is the message of this time. He is a good, good Father and we are loved by Him. The lyrics are the sound I hear in the Spirit when I wait upon God. I hear the Spirit revealing the love of the Father and revealing the truth of our identity as sons and daughters.

This truth is our security and the peg that will not fall. Many will be able to come home and hang up their outer garments on this peg of truth. They will come home to the Father’s house and to the Father’s heart where they will fit securely.
