Decisions, decisions, decisions. Life is full of decisions. We make a series of choices every day of our lives, but some seasons are especially full of decisions. Such is this Jewish month of Av. As the fifth month of the ecclesiastical year on the Hebrew calendar, it is associated with grace. This is especially good considering all the choices to be made. In addition to grace, we need discernment…but how do we get it? The answer lies right before our eyes. The answer is in Av itself.
Do We Really Know God as Our Abba Father?
The word Av means “Abba or Father”. He is the source of our discernment and our very life. The question is: do we really know God as our Abba Father? We have to start here. Do we know Him as Father? And if not, how can we? We can know Him as Father, but it is our choice. He has given us free will to choose Him. This perhaps is the most important choice of all. Scripture points our hearts in the right direction: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (Jn 1:12-13).
Knowing Him as Father starts with receiving and believing in Him. When we receive Him, we receive His forgiveness and become His child. Believing Him means trusting and having faith in Him. So, before we move on, take time to consider His offer of forgiveness and adoption: “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father’ (Rom. 8:14-15 emphasis mine)! May His Words open your to heart to receive Him as your Abba Father.
How Hearing His Voice Changes Us
“So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Rom 10:17)
Did you hear that? The Word says that our faith grows as we hear. Can you see how belief is linked with hearing? In this month of choices, hearing is the action that the Lord is highlighting. When God is our Father, we have access to His discernment and wisdom, all we have to do is ask and He will freely give it to us.
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)
When we position our hearts to hear His voice, we grow in discernment. Hearing is clearly depicted in many of this month’s characteristics. The tribe associated with this month is Simeon and his name means “gracious hearing”. If you study Simeon, he seems to be hard of hearing, however, the Lord is merciful and redeems our bad decisions for our good and His glory.
We are Faced with a Choice at the Edge of Our Promised Land
Consider how Israel was positioned in Av. Were they presented with important, life changing decisions? The answer is yes! It was on the 9th of Av when the spies returned with their news report of the Promised Land (Num. 13). Although there were giants in this very fruitful land, Joshua and Caleb believed the Lord and encouraged Israel to go forth to possess the land. The other spies, however, gave a negative report and instilled fear.
Israel was faced with a choice on the edge of the Promised Land. They went with the majority and chose unbelief. This led to devastating, immediate ramifications in Israel’s history. Specifically, forty years of wandering in the wilderness, culminating in the death of that entire generation, twenty years and older. That generation would never enter the Promised Land.
The Lord presents us with a similar choice this month. As we come out of the three-week period called “Between the Straits” on Av 9, we also stand at the edge of our Promised Land. As we exit this narrow passage of time, we will be presented with a choice: To believe the good report of the Lord or settle in unbelief. Whose news report will you listen to?
May we learn from Israel’s history and choose to hear and believe the truth of our Father’s voice. May we tune in to His roar of truth and love leading us in His way.
Where do you find yourself this month of Av? This is not just about history and the Israelites…it’s about you! What choice lies before you? Whose voice will you listen to? May you position yourself to hear His truth. I implore you to believe the good report of the Lord. Unbelief has severe consequences. Believing, on the other hand, is credited to you as righteousness (Gen. 15:6).
Most importantly, have you accepted His offer of forgiveness and adoption? In this month of choices, make the best decision of your life and choose this day whom you will serve…Him (Jos. 24:15)! (To Subscribe to the Elijah List subscribe here.)
The Lord gave Christine Vales a deep desire to serve and point others to Him just before the turn of the century. It has been a beautiful journey and she is still discovering the gifts He planted in her—to use them to serve others and bring glory to Him! Most recently while Christine and her husband, Carlos, began exploring the Hebrew roots of their Christian faith, Christine discovered the Lord’s prophetic calendar. The Lord began to stir her prophetic gift through understanding His appointed times and seasons as they were understood by His people, and the need for them to be understood today! After several years of studying and creating her own handwritten Hebrew/Gregorian Calendar, Christine created and released the first edition of “His Appointed Times: Hebrew/Gregorian Calendar & Journal” in 2017. Christine continues to follow His calling in the prophetic, as she has since the beginning of her story, where she faithfully is lifting up her voice to the Lord and raising her eyes to the fields…for they are already white for harvest (John 4:35)!
